The International Scientific Conference on «The Turkmen State of Kunya Urgench and Central Asia in the First Half of XIII Century» started its work at Andalib State Musical and Drama Theater in Dashoguz.

The large-scale forum aimed at highlighting the role and significance of the historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people in developing human civilization, promote the thorough study and conservation of it is a vivid result of the policy pursued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to step up international scientific and humanitarian contacts with the view of expanding further and enriching spiritual treasuries of the nation.

Calling for revival of age-old spiritual values of the Turkmen people, the national leader in his speeches and theoretical works emphasizes that in present-day Turkmenistan greater importance is given to promotion of scientific research, broad exchange of information and expansion of international cooperation. having earned Ashgabat the reputation of being the largest scientific and cultural centre in Central Asia conferences focusing on various branches of knowledge conducted on a regular basis under the patronage of the President of Turkmenistan are to achieve these goals.

Scientists and researchers from the United States, Russia, Canada, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, China, India, Pakistan Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Oman, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Syria, Egypt, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia had arrived to Turkmenistan to participate in the conference organized by the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Dashoguz Velayat Khyakimlik on the initiative and under the patronage of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The cabinet ministers, representatives of public organisations, scientists and cultural workers, rectors of Turkmen higher educational institutions, journalists and students attended the forum opening ceremony.

The welcome statement of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to participants of the scientific forum was presented at the opening ceremony. The Turkmen leader expressed belief that this forum of scientists would discover new sources and scientific data on the history and scientific and cultural life of the Turkmen State of Kunya Urgench that had profoundly influenced cultural and economic development of Central Asia and the Middle East in the ancient and medieval periods and a number of interesting reports on the study, restoration and protection of archaeological monuments would be presented.

In his statement the President of Turkmenistan said that the historical past of Kunya Urgench, which was called Urva, Jurjan and Urgench in different periods, archaeological and architectural monuments inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and testifying to the flowering of the art of building in this state, had been attracting scientists for many years. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov underscored that the large-scale work based on reliable historical facts and scientific sources was carried out in Turkmenistan to restore age-old pages in history and ancient culture of the Turkmen people. The audience welcomed the Turkmen leader’s welcome statement with the storm of applause.

The reports on the topics under discussion at the conference were presented at the plenary meeting. A Russian researcher V. Besolov dedicated his report to the construction of domed mausoleums in Kunya Urgench. A German orientalist A. Schaefer told about the practical role of several ancient articles in the life of local people of that period. A. Saati from Greece, J. Badini from Pakistan, S. Rajep from Canada spotlighted a variety of aspects of the history of the Turkmen State of Kunya Urgench, an Indian scientist Ch. K. Kumar told about international cooperation in studying the heritage of Kunya Urgench.

Upon concluding the plenary meeting, conference participants and guests visited an exposition showcasing Turkmenistan’s achievements in the spheres of archaeology and ethnography, which was arranged in the spacious foyer.

In the afternoon the discussions were continued during five sections held in the conference halls of Andalib State Musical and Drama Theatre of Dashoguz Velayat, the Agricultural Institute, B. Seytakov Pedagogical College and at the hotels Uzboy and Diyarbekir. A number of interesting reports focusing on the themes of research were presented in each section.
