The International Scientific Conference on «The Turkmen State of Kunya Urgench and Central Asia in the First Half of XIII Century» has started its work in Dashoguz today. The forum held on the initiative and under the patronage of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is organized by the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Dashoguz Velayat Khyakimlik.

Our country again has brought together historians and orientalists, archaeologists, ethnographers and other specialists in the humanitarian sciences from 32 world countries as well as Turkmen scientists, university lecturers and cultural workers.

The main aim of this forum is to discuss the approaches to promoting international cooperation in conservation of historical and cultural monuments in Kunya Urgench, to study historiography and historical sources about Kunya Urgench Turkmen, the role and place of their empire among Central Asian states, unknown facts of their history and ethnography and advancement of science and culture in this vast region, which once was a part of the empire with the capital in Gurganj (present-day Kunya Urgench) in the pre-Mongolian period.

As is known, at the verge of XII—XIII centuries the Turkmen state of Kunya Urgench was the largest and most powerful state in the Muslim East. The outstanding thinkers including Biruni and Avicenna, prominent architects worked in Gurganj, famous Sufis and theologians lived there, it was the bastion of heroic resistance to Genghis Khan’s army. Such outstanding figures from Kunya Urgench as Nadjmeddin Kubra and Mahmud Zamahshari are widely known. The scientific conferences dedicated to each of them were held in our country in the past years.

Extant constructions restored and carefully preserved by specialists of the Kunya Urgench Reserve and the National Department of Turkmenistan for Protection, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments tell about former beauty of Kunya Urgench. Forum participants will make a tour to these masterpieces of antiquity, many of which are places of pilgrimage for local people.

Conference participants will present over 100 reports during five conference sections. The guests will visit landmarks and museums of the Turkmen capital where foreign participants will arrive before they leave for Dashoguz and have meetings with students of the humanitarian institutions.
